Tocache Jurisdictional Initiative announced to generate a sustainable production landscape in San Martin, Peru

The Tocache Jurisdictional Initiative is a multi-stakeholder alliance to promote the conversion of this province of San Martin (Peru) into a model of sustainable production in the Peruvian Amazon, supported by a shared vision, action plan, governance and monitoring of the landscape in four pillars: Environmental, Social, Productive and Governance.

The province of Tocache is one of the main cocoa and palm oil production areas in Peru. There is a strong presence of producer organizations and it is a supply area for cocoa exporters and palm oil processors.

The objective of the Tocache Jurisdictional Initiative is to convert this landscape into a future deforestation-free supply zone in Peru. To achieve this, an action plan has been designed. In addition, pilots and proofs of concept will be generated and resources will be promoted and mobilized under a public-private governance scheme and performance monitoring. This will be accompanied by training for decision making, knowledge management and a national and global communication campaign.

The initiative is being promoted within the framework of the Coalition for Sustainable Production (supported by TFA), with the support of Helvetas, Earth Innovation Institute and Earthworm Foundation.

This initiative will help reduce deforestation and benefit the economy of thousands of farming families in the region.

The main lines of work of this initiative consider the environmental, production, social welfare and inclusion, state and governance aspects. In addition, the action plan will incorporate clear goals, indicators and responsible parties, which will be designed in the near future. The development of the actions will be promoted and facilitated through pilots and proofs of concept. All this will be accompanied by work on resource mobilization, monitoring, governance and communication, with the support of the members of the Coalition for Sustainable Production.

The announcement event of the Tocache Jurisdictional Initiative, held on June 2, was attended by the Regional Federation of Oil Palm (FREDEPALMA), Central de Cacao y Aroma, Cooperativa Agroindustrial Tocache, DeVida and the Regional Government of San Martin. In addition, civil society organizations such as Solidaridad and Proforest have expressed their support for the initiative.
