EXPOCAFÉ: Environmental commitments of coffee, progress in Colombia and situation in Peru

This Thursday, November 4, the Symposium: Environmental commitments of coffee, advances in Colombia and Peru took place within the framework of Expocafé 2021. The event was attended by the following participants:

- Javier Ortiz Tropical Forest Alliance Coordinator (Colombia)
- Gustavo A. Gomez, General Manager Asoexport Colombia
- Fabiola Muñoz: Coalition for Sustainable Production (Peru)

Having a sustainable production is an interest of the Ministry in view of the demands of international markets and the country's commitments regarding climate change mitigation and adaptation actions.

"The National Coffee Action Plan has among its strategic actions the mitigation of greenhouse gases and the production of coffee under agroforestry systems", said Augusto Aponte, representative of the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation.

From the corporate side, Luis Navarro, President of the Chamber of Coffee and CocoaThe company's environmental and social responsibility, indicates that we have to be aware of the global situation, not only because of an environmental issue, but also because it is something that the sector requires. The end consumer today is aware of the products and programs that result in benefits in the face of climate change. In this sense, he indicates that it is necessary to establish a space where the different sectors can work to meet the goals and have a follow-up plan.

Colombia: Coffee, Forests and Climate Agreement

The agreement of coffee, The forest and climate agreement was signed on August 10, 2021. The agreement is strategic for the following reasons:

  • Coffee is addressed as part of the solution, not as the problem.
  • Avoid reputational consequences
  • It allows the sector to prepare for new international regulations to import deforestation-free products.
  • Take advantage of potential opportunities to conserve the high biodiversity of coffee-producing territories.
  • To make progress in key enabling conditions for the competitiveness of the coffee chain.

Peru: the Coalition for Sustainable Production and the Cocoa, Forest and Diversity Agreement

The Coalition for Sustainable Production is a multi-stakeholder space made up of more than 40 organizations that brings together the private sector, the State and cooperation at different levels such as national and subnational governments. Initiatives are promoted with the participation of regional and local governments and the private sector.

The Coalition promotes a tropical agriculture that does not live at the expense of the forest, but in synergy with the forest, with an integrated land management approach.

The Cocoa, Forests and Diversity agreement unites competitiveness and sustainability. It aims to contribute to the differentiation of cocoa in international markets from its origin free of deforestation and according to the requirements of international markets.

The Expocafé is being held virtually from August 26 to November 31 and in person from November 11 to 14.
