Coalition for Sustainable Production of Peru establishes its Board of Directors to strengthen its deforestation-free supply chain agenda

On May 12, 2020, a virtual session was held to install the Board of Directors of the Coalition for a Sustainable Production. This action is a step prior to its public launch scheduled for July 2020.

This Coalition was founded in 2017 within the framework of the Expo Amazónica, which is the main business fair of the Peruvian Amazon. Since then, it has achieved the linkage of more than 37 private, public and civil society organizations that together have designed a roadmap, defined the governing bodies and its institutional image.

The Coalition represents an opportunity for collective action by the private sector and government. This collaboration for a low-carbon, socially and environmentally responsible economic revival will focus on strengthening dialogue and encouraging concrete actions and commitments through sectoral agreements. It will also promote sustainable jurisdictions pilots and promote forestry investments and the sustainable use of biodiversity in the country.

In this regard, it is important to mention that the Peruvian Amazon rainforest lost 2.3 million hectares between 2001 and 2018. In that sense, effective coordinated action is required to protect the Peruvian Amazon rainforest hand in hand with increased sustainable commodity production.

In addition, the Peruvian government has announced greater ambition to address climate change by 2030. While Peru committed to reduce its GHG emissions by 30% by 2030, within the framework of the Paris Agreement; during the COP 25 in Madrid, the Ministry of Environment announced that the GHG emissions reduction target will be 35% by 2030, with the support of the private sector.

The Tropical Forest Alliance (TFA) has provided support to this multi-stakeholder alliance that will enable the design of sectoral agreements for sustainable production and contribute to sustainability models in Peru's jurisdictions. Starting this year, TFA has expanded its actions in Peru with the formation of a technical team to support the Coalition for Sustainable Production and the definition of a work plan. TFA works side by side with Solidaridad and has the support of the Alternative Development Mechanism and Earth Innovation Institute.

Finally, it is important to note that the 2020 - 2021 board of directors of the Coalition is made up of: the International Center for Tropical Agriculture, the Indigenous Peoples' Chamber of Commerce, the Amazon Regional Commonwealth, Refinca, the Acopagro Cooperative, Solidaridad, the Peruvian Society for Ecodevelopment, the Ministry of the Environment, the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation and the National Forestry and Wildlife Service.
