From September 19-22, Madre de Dios hosted ExpoAmazon 2024, the largest business fair in the Peruvian Amazon. This event, held within the framework of the Amazon Regional Commonwealth, not only sought to promote sustainable production, but also to lay the foundations for a low-emissions development agenda for the Peruvian Amazon.
During this fair, a series of forums were held to bring together public and private sector actors and civil society organizations to debate and propose policies aimed at economic growth, forest conservation and the inclusion of Amazonian producers.
Among the most outstanding forums were:
High Level Meeting:
It brought together leaders from public, private, civil society and indigenous organizations working in and for the Peruvian Amazon to outline approaches to a development agenda, sustainable connectivity, finance and indigenous peoples' rights.
Biobusiness Forum:
The importance of bio-businesses as a strategy for biodiversity conservation and economic development for local communities was highlighted, pointing out the enabling conditions for scaling up and success stories.
Sustainable Amazon Forum:
The need to strengthen regional conservation systems, the bioeconomy, international market regulations on deforestation-free production, financial and non-financial incentives for small producers and the promotion of instruments such as REDD+ were discussed.
In these three outstanding forums, more than 60 leaders and specialists and more than 450 people participated in the different blocks.
Despite the challenges facing the Amazon due to fires and environmental pressures, ExpoAmazon 2024 reaffirmed participants' commitment to advance a roadmap that ensures competitiveness, sustainability and forest conservation.
As a continuation of these dialogues, the knowledge gathered during the forums and events will be systematized in order to contribute to a development agenda for the Peruvian Amazon that actors such as the Amazon Regional Commonwealth are promoting.
