The monitoring pilot: scientific evidence for decision making on adaptation to EU regulations on imported deforestation

The objective of the workshop was to present the results of the research focused on the development of a pilot methodology for forest and forest monitoring using Sentinel-2 satellite images that allow us to know the dynamics of the coverage of intervened farmers' farms in 2018 and compare them with subsequent years.

The Coordinator of the Coalition for Sustainable Production, Fabiola Muñoz, was in charge of the welcoming remarks, highlighting the importance of polygon data collection, deforestation monitoring and production traceability as the sequence to comply with demonstrating a deforestation-free chain.

Belinda Tello, Geoanalyst at Solidaridad and the consultant in charge of the research, Christian Vargas, presented the evaluation criteria, methodology and findings of the document, followed by a question and answer session with representatives from ICRAF, Conservation International, the National Forestry and Wildlife Service (SERFOR) and the Ministry of Environment (MINAM).

Contribution to the Cocoa Agreement Forests and Diversity

The closing remarks were given by the coordinator of the Cocoa, Forest and Diversity AgreementIn her speech, Angélica Fort highlighted the similarities between the cocoa and coffee chains in terms of compliance with the European standard, especially the work involved in gathering information on polygons, monitoring and traceability. In this regard, she invited stakeholders in both chains to join the Cocoa, Forests and Diversity Agreement's Monitoring and Traceability working group, which has been meeting periodically to create a work plan, identify products and tools to meet international commitments, discuss protocols for their interoperability and identify the roles of the stakeholders involved.
