Coordination is strengthened for monitoring and traceability of Amazonian production chains in relation to the EUDR.

In order to disseminate progress and improve coordination on monitoring and traceability at regional and national level in the context of the EUDR, an event organized by the Regional Government of San Martin, the Regional Cocoa Technical Roundtable of San Martin and the Cocoa, Forest and Diversity Agreement has been held on in the city of, Tarapoto. It was, as well, promoted under the framework of the Coalition for Sustainable Production.

The event was attended by technical representatives from entities such as César Santisteban from MIDAGRI (who presented the progress of the Agricultural Producers' Register and the Digital Identity as instruments to issue potential certificates of non-deforestation of Peruvian producers), Milagros Sandoval from MINAM (who pointed out the progress of Ukukui as a monitoring tool) and Mario Rivero from the Regional Government of San Martin (who reported on the roadmap implemented by the region to prepare for the EUDR).

The meeting also brought together international exhibitors such as Sandra Durango, Ciat-Bioversity Alliance Researcher  who presented the Colombian experience of a Monitoring, Reporting and Verification Protocol for Zero Deforestation Agreements.Luiz Calado, Head of Strategic Solutions and Engagement for Latin America, Global Forest Watch, highlighted -as well- the use of this free monitoring tool and the opportunities for collaboration with Peruvian stakeholders.

He closed the event by highlighting aspects such as:

  • The need to establish a common framework for the collection of field information, including georeferencing points and polygons, to serve as a basis for interoperability in monitoring and traceability. In this context, MIDAGRI -as the national authority- has an important role to play in defining and promoting the implementation of this common framework.
  • The implementation of a comprehensive national information and training plan on the EUDR, with a special focus on the tools necessary for its application, particularly on capacity building in the collection of polygons. This activity could be coordinated by national institutions and platforms in collaboration with technical roundtables, supported by civil society organizations.

The event was supported by several member organizations and allies of the Cocoa, Forests and Diversity Agreement such as APPCACAO, Earth Innovation Institute, Solidaridad, Alianza Ciat-Bioversity, World Resources Institute, Rikolto, Helvetas, Tropical Forest Alliance, GIZ (through the MiCacao project) and Sierra y Selva Exportadora.

.

This meeting was presented as a unique opportunity to share knowledge, establish synergies and strengthen cooperation among the various actors involved in monitoring and traceability, thus contributing to the sustainable development of the region and the country.

The Cocoa, Forests and Diversity Agreement is an agreement between private organizations, government and civil society that promotes the differentiation of Peruvian cocoa based on quality, diversity of origin attributes and its restorative and deforestation-free potential.
