It was organized by the Coalition for Sustainable Production, Solidarity and Business Alliance for the Amazon, a platform promoted by USAID, Government of Canada and Conservation International.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><b><i>What is the European Union (EU) regulation on deforestation?\u00a0<\/i><\/b><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the world has lost 100 million hectares of forest cover in the last decade. The net loss was 50 million hectares out of a total forest area of four billion hectares. Growing global demand for agricultural products is a major driver of deforestation, as it drives agricultural expansion into (tropical) forests and other ecosystems. More than 50% of deforested land is devoted to cropland and almost 40% to pasture.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Faced with this challenge, a new EU regulation will come into force this year that aims to ban agricultural products linked to deforestation and forest degradation. The regulation affects the commodities coffee, cocoa, palm, soy, timber, meat and derivatives.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0This law is another step in the battle against deforestation and joins a growing number of international agreements and private sector initiatives. Similar regulations are currently being developed in other international markets that are important for Peru.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-226619b elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"226619b\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-f1cbcde\" data-id=\"f1cbcde\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-adaa0ae elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"adaa0ae\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><b><i>The impact assessment study of the EU regulation\u00a0<\/i><\/b><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the Peruvian case, the commodities that could be most affected are cocoa and coffee. The cocoa sector has been implementing the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/produccionsostenible.org.pe\/en\/working-groups\/cocoa-2\/#1banner\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Cocoa, Forest and Diversity Agreement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The agreement between private organizations, government and civil society promotes the differentiation of Peruvian cocoa based on quality, diversity of origin attributes and its restorative and deforestation-free potential. and start in the regions or districts most at risk of deforestation.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep informed about implementation rules (the famous guidelines).<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Solving the legality issue - Regulation is a combination of political discussion, about climate change, emissions, consumption in Europe and deforestation.
