Towards EUDR: Amazon region joins forces to comply with the European Union's zero deforestation standard

During February, the event "Effects of the European Union regulation on deforestation-free products in Coffee and Cocoa value chains and urgent actions for compliance". in Chachapoyas, capital of the Amazon region.

The meeting brought together more than 100 participants, including members of the Coalition and representatives of organizations, ministries and cooperatives in the agricultural sector. Its purpose was to provide key information on the EUDR regulation, thus facilitating the development of a roadmap and action plan for compliance in the region's coffee and cocoa chains.

Angelica FortThe event began with a presentation on the effects of the EUDR on Peru's coffee and cocoa production chains, highlighting the contributions and progress that the Coalition has been making: 

  • Collection of relevant information: provide workshops and geo-referencing, monitoring and traceability tools so that all actors in the production chains can prove that their production was carried out on deforestation-free land. In addition, the Coalition organizes events to inform producers, technicians and decision-makers about the regulations.
  • Incentives for sustainable and competitive production: conducted a consultancy on public and private incentives to promote the profitability of family agriculture in cocoa production specifically.
  • Sector agreements: The Coalition has the Cocoa, Forests and Diversity Agreement and the Coffee and Forests Agreement, two strategic alliances that represent the collective action between private organizations, government and civil society to transform and differentiate both sectors based on the quality and sustainability of the production chain.
  • EUDR data available to everyone: offer impact studies within the cocoa and coffee value chains. It also has the tool "CHATGPT EUDR"The company has created a virtual space on the web where users can post questions about the regulation and artificial intelligence is in charge of providing answers to their queries.

Subsequently, Javier Ortiz BahamonThe European Forestry Institute's Representative for Latin America, Mr. M. M. M. M. M. M. M. M. M. M. M. M. M., presented the requirements and technical aspects of market due diligence in the sector.

Knowing the current state of coffee and cocoa production was a key section of the agenda. Marco Antonio Iberico PortocarreroDirector of the Regional Agrarian Directorate of Amazonas, who presented a diagnosis of both chains, emphasizing the list of agrarian producers, legal security of land, production and export volumes, among other high-value issues. 

The second block of the event began with Yris Aquije Size, Specialist of the Register of Agricultural Producers in Peru, who presented the progress of this resource developed by MIDAGRI. Finally, Rene Bartra from the Earth Innovation Institute team, shared the experience of implementing a roadmap in the San Martin region, highlighting the lessons learned in the transition to deforestation-free agriculture. 

This event marks the beginning of a coordinated effort between producers, technicians, cooperatives and organizations in the agricultural sector on the road to sustainable production and successful compliance with European Union regulations in Peru.
